Ke$ha's 'Blow' Director Addresses Lady Gaga 'Unicorn' Flap
Unicorn cameos in 'Born This Way' and 'Blow' videos is 'just weird coincidence,' Chris Marrs Piliero tells MTV News.

The brand-new videos for Ke$ha's "Blow" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" couldn't be more different. But fans on the Web have been comparing the clips, thanks to a special cameo the two videos have in common. With unicorns appearing in both "Blow" and "BTW," some Gaga fans are accusing the K-Dollar of stealing from their Mother Monster.
But MTV News spoke to "Blow" director Chris Marrs Piliero, who explained that it's pure coincidence his video and the Nick Knight-directed video both feature unicorns.
"It's very odd. It's one of those weird things, and I think a lot of people on the Internet don't grasp the sense of time [that goes into making videos]. Some Gaga fans, they don't realize that just because it was announced there might be a unicorn [in Gaga's video], it's like, we didn't film the video after that announcement," he said.
"It's like [the movies] 'Dante's Peak' and 'Volcano' and then there was 'Armageddon' and 'Deep Impact.' I don't know, I know when things like that happen when I was a part of the audience, I was like, 'That's weird and fishy,' but now being on the other side, it's just weird coincidences," he explained. "What are the odds of that?"
In fact, Piliero had a gut feeling that he should use unicorns many, many moons ago and he thought Ke$ha was the right artist to join with the mythological creatures onscreen.
"Ke$ha was looking to make kind of something different, a video that was cool and random, and I had this idea running in my head with just the idea of unicorns," he recalled. "If I massacred unicorns, they could bleed rainbows. I'm a fan of violence and I'm always trying to find a way to make it OK."
The rainbow-spewing unicorns weren't the only cameo that Piliero hoped to nab. He also wanted "Dawson's Creek" star James Van Der Beek to appear in the clip. "He's such an awesome guy. He was down for it," he said. "He had seen the Black Keys video [I shot] and he was stoked on the idea. It was so much fun. He and Ke$ha kind of went for all the craziness. I think he has a fantastic comic side. He's good at being naturally funny. It's about the delivery."
Ke$ha, of course, was onboard for all the zaniness. "Before we started filming, we had quite a few talks. She was adamant you can't back away from the crazy; everything about the idea she loved and she enforced the fact that she wanted to embrace every aspect of it and really go for it," he recalled. "On set, she was having fun. She was like, 'I want to lick a unicorn.' It was rad working with her because there definitely wasn't a sense of her feeling awkward about stuff or detached; no ego. It felt like we had worked together before."

'Rango': The Reviews Are In!
The critics heap praise on Johnny Depp's animated reunion with Gore Verbinski.
By Eric Ditzian
With top-notch fare at a minimum at the multiplex during these early months of the years, "Gnomeo & Juliet" has slowly crept up the box-office ranks, starting in the #3 slot and narrowly — by $135,000 — missing out on the top spot last weekend.
This weekend, however, those animated garden statues will make way for a CGI lizard who will dominate the box office. With Johnny Depp voicing the title character and his "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski at the helm, "Rango" has collected enthusiastic reviews. The only criticism, it seems, is whether the PG flick is most squarely aimed at children or their parents. For that critique and a whole lot of praise, read on.
The Story
"Depp plays a zonk-eyed pet lizard traveling cross-country through the Mojave Desert when a freak accident leaves him stranded in the blistering sun. Far removed from his natural habitat, the green-skinned, Hawaiian shirt-wearing reptile finds it virtually impossible to camouflage himself in his new all-brown environment, choosing instead to pass for something he's not, a fearless gunfighter named Rango. With no real-world experience but a near-inexhaustible supply of good luck, Rango looks exactly like what the naively optimistic denizens of Dirt need right now: a hero. Their old-timey desert outpost is beset by predators and ruled by a corrupt mayor (Ned Beatty, playing a less huggable villain than he did in 'Toy Story 3'), who clearly has a hand in the mysterious drought making all their lives miserable." — Peter Debruge, Variety
The Visuals
"The technical production sparkles. The first feature-length animation from Industrial Light and Magic effects studio, 'Rango' is a holiday for the eye. Its action is set against grandiose, panoramic Southwest landscapes, whose epic vistas are rendered in rich color and vivid detail. Every mote of dust in a shaft of light, each facet in a barroom shot glass, the individual wrinkles in Rango's reptilian skin — there's not a pixel on the screen that hasn't been art-directed to within an inch of its life. The action sequences are dizzying, death-defying marvels. The animated cast — a menagerie of gila monsters, horned toads, rattlers, rats and other frontier wildlife — is sharply individualized and expressive. The lizard's asymmetrical poker face, with pop-eyed peepers that rotate like gun turrets, isn't very mobile in human terms, yet it's effortlessly easy to read." — Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune
The Comparison to Other Animated Flicks
"A marvelous mash-up of Old West and newfangled, 'Rango' rewrites the animation playbook with its eye-popping critters and varmints, and its hero's tale (tail?) of a chameleon desperate for a SAG card and a town desperate for a sheriff. What fun. In a world choked with animated films — the good, the bad and the ugly — it's hard to be either original or great. Yet director Gore Verbinski has done both — and without 3-D — breaking the rules and new ground." — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times
The Dissenters
"[I]t's completely soulless. I may be in the minority. But seeing this sour riff on everything from to 'Cat Ballou' to 'Chinatown' to 'The Shakiest Gun in the West,' with a big suburban preview audience, was instructive. Not much laughter. Moans and sobs of pre-teen fright whenever Rattlesnake Jake slithered into view, threatening murder. Any one crowd's response to any movie may not be indicative; nonetheless the audience's mood seemed in synch with my own." — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
The Final Word
"[T]he spirit is closer to those old Bugs Bunny cartoons in which Bugs would cross paths with real movie stars or perform Wagnerian opera. In other words, it is not self-conscious knowingness that drives 'Rango' but rather a quirky and sincere enthusiasm for all the strange stuff that has piled up in the filmmakers' heads over the years. ... In spite of a profile that should place it alongside 'Megamind' and 'Despicable Me' and the long list of other overblown, have-fun-or-else cartoons, this rambling, anarchic tale is gratifyingly fresh and eccentric. Much of the time you don't quite know where it is going, which is high praise indeed given the slick predictability that governs most other entertainments of its kind." — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Johnny Depp Says There's A Little 'Rango' In All Of Us
'We find ourselves in certain situations that you have to adapt to,' Depp tells MTV News of his cartoon chameleon.
By Kara Warner

Johnny Depp is one of those actors who disappear so fully into the characters he plays onscreen that with each new film, it's hard to know what to expect from the Oscar nominee. Depp's latest, the animated pic "Rango," is no exception.
In the film — directed by Depp's "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski and featuring the vocal talents of Abigail Breslin, Isla Fischer and Bill Nighy — Depp plays the title character, a chameleon living a lonely life in a cage as a family pet. But Rango is also an aspiring actor so he stages elaborate plays within the confines of his little glass home. He suddenly finds his life turned upside down when his cage is accidentally thrown out of his owners' car during a cross-country move, landing him in the strange town of Dirt in the Nevada desert.
MTV News caught up with Depp and we asked him if, given his chameleon-like abilities as an actor, he felt a sense of kinship with the little green reptile, and whether Rango is perhaps the closest he's come to playing himself.
"What I saw early on with the character, and something that Gore and I talked about, is that it is in sort of all of us, in a way," Depp explained. "There is a chameleonic side to all of us in which we find ourselves in certain situations that you have to adapt to, sitting across from personalities that you have to adapt to in order to survive the moment or survive the day," he said. "That's kind of how I saw Rango."

'Social Network,' 'King's Speech,' 'True Grit' Lead Oscar Nominations
'The King's Speech' leads the pack with 12 nominations.
By Gil Kaufman

When the nominees for the 83rd annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning (January 25), "The King's Speech" came out on top with a field-leading 12 nominations. The critically acclaimed story of Queen Elizabeth II's stuttering father was trailed by the remake of the western "True Grit," which locked up 10 nods, followed by "The Social Network" and "Inception," which each racked up eight nominations.
In one of the most lauded performances of the year, Natalie Portman lead the roster of Best Actress nominees for her role as a conflicted ballerina in "Black Swan," in a category in which she'll face off against Annette Benning ("The Kids are All Right"), Nicole Kidman ("Rabbit Hole"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Winter's Bone") and Michelle Williams ("Blue Valentine"). In all, the thriller "Swan" received five nominations.
The Best Actor race will pit another early favorite, Colin Firth of "The King's Speech," against Javier Bardem ("Biutiful"), last year's winner, Jeff Bridges ("True Grit"), Jesse Eisenberg ("The Social Network"), and one of the show's co-hosts, James Franco ("127 Hours").
Going into Tuesday's nominations, the Facebook story "The Social Network" appeared to have an edge thanks to a Best Drama win at the recent Golden Globes and a number of top awards from critics groups. But considering the love the Academy has for triumph-over-adversity stories such as the one told in "The King's Speech," it's possible the story of stammering royalty could prevail, especially since it pulled off a major upset over the weekend by winning the top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards, whose winner often goes on to snag the Best Picture prize at the Oscars.
Best Supporting Actress nominees include Amy Adams ("The Fighter"), Helena Bonham Carter ("The King's Speech"), Melissa Leo ("The Fighter"), newcomer Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit") and Jacki Weaver ("The Animal Kingdom"). Though a win is unlikely, the nomination for 14-year-old Steinfeld in her first movie role could mean big things in the future for the previously unknown eighth grader, who won the role over 15,000 girls who auditioned.
In the Supporting Actor category, it will be a battle between Christian Bale ("The Fighter"), John Hawkes ("Winter's Bone"), Jeremy Renner ("The Town"), Mark Ruffalo ("The Kids are All Right") and previous winner Geoffrey Rush ("The King's Speech"). Bale's nomination is one of seven for the boxing drama, which did not earn an acting nomination for lead Mark Wahlberg, who had to settle for a nod as one of the film's producers.
For the second year there are 10 movies contending for the Best Picture prize, a roster that is doubled from the previous selection of five films. Best Pictures nominees include: "Black Swan," "The Fighter," "Inception," "The Kids Are All Right," "The King's Speech," "127 Hours," "The Social Network," "Toy Story 3," "True Grit" and "Winter's Bone."
For Best Director it will be Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan") up against David O' Russell ("The Fighter"), Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech"), David Fincher ("The Social Network"), and Joel Coen and Ethan Coen ("True Grit").
Box-office smash and mind-bending adventure "Inception" didn't earn any acting awards, but it did pick up a raft of nominations in technical categories, including Art Direction, Cinematography, Original Score, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects and Original Screenplay. Another box-office giant, Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," was shut out of the acting race but racked up several technical nods, including Art Direction, Costume Design and Visual Effects.
Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor and partner Atticus Ross were nominated for Original Score for their haunting music for "The Social Network," and "Tron: Legacy" picked up one nod for Achievement in Sound Editing.

Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller: Getting Back Together?!?!?!?!
When it comes to Charlie Sheen, little takes us by surprise at this point. Alcohol. Drugs. Porn stars. Bombshell McGee. Eh, whatever.
But we didn't see this report coming: a reliable source tells The Palm Beach Post that Sheen might get back together with ex-wife Brooke Mueller. That source? Mueller's mother.
“They’re talking about it constantly, and Brooke has been saying she and Charlie are trying to get back together,” Moira Fiore told the newspaper. “She seems ready to give it another try."
However, a friend of the Mueller family tells E! News that Moira's comments were (somehow) "taken out of context."
"Charlie and Brooke talk and I think everything is still friendly between them, but I'm sure it's for the sake of the boys. They are not together as far as I know."
An anonymous insider qualifying every statement with "I think" and "as far as I know." Incredibly, Fiore's comments are actually more believable at the moment. Only in Hollywood...

Critics' Choice Movie Awards Ruled By 'The Social Network,' 'Inception'
Natalie Portman shouts out her 'Black Swan' director for bringing her and her fiancé together, while Christian Bale gets emotional.

Before the folks behind the 2011 Critics' Choice Movie Awards on VH1 dished out their choices for the best flicks of 2010, they chose to spoof them first.
The guys of "Jackass" kicked off the festivities Friday night (January 14) with their own kooky rendition of the dream drama "Inception," pretending to plant the idea in Steve-O's head to bungee-jump in a portable toilet and get splashed with other people's poo. While the guys' twist on hit flicks like "The Social Network" — which went on to win Best Picture — and "Black Swan" peppered the show, the rest of the evening was pretty clean, as movies like "The Fighter" and "Inception" racked up trophies.
Following opening remarks from beefy action star-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger and an introduction from Ashton Kutcher, "The Fighter" took home the first award of the night for Best Acting Ensemble. Lowell, Massachusetts, policeman Mickey O'Keefe, who plays himself in the movie as the mentor of "Irish" Mickey Ward, accepted the award on behalf of the cast, beaming, "This is just bitchin'!"
Rocking a delicate pastel dress, "True Grit" newcomer Hailee Steinfeld took home the prize for Best Young Actor/Actress, thanking everyone from her talent agency to her family, and even giving a shout-out to God.
Eva Mendes handed over the Best Supporting Actor award to Christian Bale for his scrappy performance in "The Fighter" (co-star Melissa Leo later won for Best Supporting Actress). The English actor recognized the real-life inspiration for the character Alice Ward, who has recently been laid up in the hospital, and briefly got emotional when thanking his wife and daughter.
"The Hangover" star Ed Helms presented the Best Action Movie award to Christopher Nolan's "Inception," applauding the film's knack for "blowing sh-- up."
Kim and Khloé Kardashian, minus their curvy sister Kourtney, presented Best Documentary Feature to "Waiting for Superman." Filmmaker David Guggenheim aptly followed up the win with an impassioned plea for widespread access to quality education for all children.
Legendary movie veteran Steven Spielberg accepted the award for Best Picture Made for Television for HBO's wartime miniseries "The Pacific," and comedy queens Joan Rivers and Sarah Silverman handed over the trophy for Best Comedy to the folks behind the high school fake-sex romp "Easy A." "It's about pretending to have sex in high school, which we're all familiar with," director Will Gluck quipped. The beloved family-friendly flick "Toy Story 3" nabbed Best Animated Feature.
The night had some musical moments as well, courtesy of house band Maroon 5, who cranked out bluesy versions of everything from Prince's sultry classic "Kiss" to Bill Withers' mournful hit "Ain't No Sunshine" throughout the show. Rapper/actor Ice Cube used his hip-hop and Hollywood experience to introduce the Music+Film Award for Quentin Tarantino, commanding attendees to "sit ya ass down" before he pumped up the filmmaker's world-renowned skills.
After a montage of scenes from Tarantino flicks like "Jackie Brown" and "Inglourious Basterds," Maroon 5's Adam Levine took the stage solo to strum Stealers Wheel's folky jam "Stuck in the Middle With You" as the infamous ear-slicing "Reservoir Dogs" scene that features the song played in the background. Keri Hilson cooed a vampy rendition of Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man," which is featured in "Pulp Fiction," heading into the audience to serenade Tarantino, purring the lyrics and oozing with sex-kitten energy. When Tarantino accepted the award, he spoke about how music informed his early screen ambitions, reminiscing about visualizing cinematic scenes as he played hits in his bedroom as a teen.
"The King's Speech" won Best Original Screenplay, while the Facebook drama "The Social Network" scored Best Adapted Screenplay. Writer Aaron Sorkin shouted out the site's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, saying, "We owe you a debt of gratitude" for the social-media phenomenon. "Network" mastermind David Fincher also nabbed Best Director.
Emily Blunt and Jimmy Kimmel teamed up for a lighthearted presentation of the Joel Siegel Award to Matt Damon for his humanitarian work with his global clean-water campaign Water.org. Kimmel feigned disinterest in Damon's efforts, quipping, "Sean Penn is actually in Haiti right now." Damon playfully fired back when he took the stage, saying, "Jimmy, I literally have no idea why you're here," which prompted the talk-show host to stroll backstage mid-speech.
Colin Firth also lightened up his acceptance speech by joking, "I will be wearing this around my neck as a talisman to give me magical powers," as he cradled his Best Actor trophy for "The King's Speech." Kevin Spacey took it back to the '90s with inexplicable impersonations of portly comedian Jon Lovitz and former President Bill Clinton before presenting Best Actress to Natalie Portman. The newly pregnant starlet thanked director Darren Aronofsky, playfully noting, "You made me very skinny and you ... made me fat" for introducing her to the film's choreographer and her new fiancé, Benjamin Millipied, with whom she's expecting her first baby.

The February 2011 issue of O magazine hits newsstands next week, and Mindy Kaling is among the featured stars within the pages.
The "Office" actress-writer-producer chatted with the talk show queen's mag about a plethora of topics such as beauty, style and kitten-filled make-up techniques.
Highlights from the interview are as follows:
Best COMPLIMENT
I still think of myself as a chubby 12-year-old so when my boyfriend says, ?You?re hot,? I smile. That?s what peoples say about Sports Illustrated models, so hearing it makes me feel like I?ve pulled off this total scam."
Best HAPPY ACCIDENT
?As a kid I would fall asleep during Saturday Night Live and wake up during Showtime at the Apollo. It introduced me to an entire world of black comedians and musicians ? people who became my heroes.?
Best BEAUTY SECRET
?I take pictures of myself before I go out. I don?t trust mirrors, but I?ll trust an un-retouched photograph.?
Best WAY TO END AN ARGUMENT
?Taka time-out, then watch YouTube videos of kittens falling asleep. Who would want to fight after that??
Best STYLE STAPLE
?I?ve always loved leather pants on rock stars, but I don?t have the figure to pull them off. Recently I got a pair of loose, slouchy black leather shorts, which I wear with wool tights. They?re comfortable and effortless, and they look so downtown.?
